After 4 years that theEPIRB has been put into service, Italian regulations require the replacement of theEPIRB or battery, even if the expiration date of the battery stamped on the device is later.

For more information refer to the SBM procedure in our glossary, where the second paragraph explains why replacement of theEPIRB, rather than just the battery, would be recommended.

Several years have passed since 2011, the year when this campaign first debuted, and the fact that we are still here revalidating it is a testament to the success of this operation and the strong appreciation of users for this initiative.

The GME campaign is valid for any make or model of EPIRB to be scrapped. The value of the used EPIRB is assessed regardless of the brand or type of the returned EPIRB and is only dependent on the GME model purchased.

This 2025 campaign is notable in that it occurs in conjunction with the launch of the new MT606G and MT606FG EPIRBs, which we commented on in this news story:

Important.

If you arrange for a replacement of a model "without" GPS to the new models "with," in this step theEPIRB programming hexadecimal UIN will be different and the name of the model you will keep on the boat will also change.
This implies that you will have to perform the following two procedures:

  • Cancelling the previous registration with COSPAS-SARSAT and issuing a new registration for the new model with the different UIN.
  • Modification of the RTF License by incorporating the name of the newly acquired model among the on-board radio-electrical equipment.

We would also like to point out that today all models of GME EPIRBs now carry the certificate of the first SBM carried out in the GME production center.
This serves not only to facilitate the conduct of some paperwork (especially for professional vessels), but also to have an additional assurance that the full power test has already been performed on theEPIRB you will purchase.
